OFP Timber Framed Homes Ltd Fire

OFP Timber Framed Homes Ltd management were awoken in the early hours of Tuesday 14th December, 2011 to the disturbing news of a fire at their premises on the Sandwich Industrial Estate, Sandwich, Kent. By the time the directors and factory management team arrived on scene at around 0340, the office areas had been wholly engulfed by flames and the roof had failed totally, leaving behind the charred remains of an office with absolutely no recoverable items left unclaimed by the fire.

Seven Fire and Rescue engines and around 25 Fire Service Personnel tackled the blaze until the building was finally made safe at around 0700.

Fortunately, an adjacent factory area was undamaged due entirely to the closing of an hour rated fire door in the corridor leading to the factory area. Given the obvious heat generated, and the apparent damage, the performance of the fire door and insulated internal timber frame was exceptional in limiting the spread of the flames.

OFP employees have rallied round admirably and a replacement server with back-up information was installed on Friday 16th December. Previously unused offices in the main factory have been refurbished through an excellent team effort and all at OFP are aiming to keep to an absolute minimum disruption to our clients over the New year period.

No cause for the fire has yet been established, but fire fighters on the scene commented that there were no signs of forced entry, so malicious foul play can be ruled out.
OFP Summer 2011

At OFP Timber Framed Homes we realise that times are still very tough, especially in the construction industry. However, we feel that it should not always be “doom and gloom” in the industry’s news. It is clear that buildings are still going up and that remarkable and exciting projects are still getting funded.

It is has been argued that there is a lag in the construction industry figures, and although we have seen a 4.7% drop in output in the first quarter of January 2011 from the Office of National Statistics, it is very likely that this will be revised up. It has been suggested by buildings.co.uk that these statistics are a hangover from the unusually cold winter, and that, in fact, the construction industry is growing rather than contracting.

So, on that positive thought, we are delighted to share with you that in July and August of this year we will be erecting over 100 units in timber frame. A flavour of the projects we will be completing are; a 46 unit Canterbury student accommodation project erected over three phases, a spacious care home in Maidstone, a 13 unit luxury housing scheme, 10 various projects of timber frame erections throughout the South East and another installation of a trio of the Center Parcs holiday tree houses. You can see these tree houses on our case studies section.

Here’s to a steadily growing and strengthening 2011 and a positive frame for the long term future of our industry.

The latest and most lavish places to stay at the Sherwood Forest complex are now the two storey Treehouses nestled in and amongst the forest itself. The dwellings have two bedrooms, a kitchen and diner, a games room (featuring a bar and pool table) and their own hot tubs. Each of the separate areas of living are connected with timber walkways that complement the surrounding areas perfectly.

The new two-storey Treehouses at Sherwood Forest are designed for families or friends who want the ultimate Center Parcs experience. They boast views of the forest with each bedroom having its very own balcony.

OFP erected the project in unique conditions in the forest. The timber frame structure was erected on platforms amongst the trees and was far from your usual construction site – with strict considerations being adhered to for the local habitat and wildlife.

To take a look at these great new builds visit the Centre Parcs interactive website.

Building Schools For The Future

In one of OFP’s largest, most complex and innovative projects to date, we were charged with the design, manufacture and construction of the timber frame structure of Maddiston primary School, Falkirk. From the outset our client, Grahams PLC, placed great emphasis on the environmental impact of the project. This happily fitted with OFP's strong environmental ethos.

So to minimise the environmental impact OFP Timber Framed Homes made a number of fundamental changes to our 'usual' methods of manufacture and construction. One such innovation, which would prove intrinsic to this scheme, was the setting up of a ‘remote’ factory, just over a mile from the site.

This flexible solution provided huge savings on energy and considerable cost-savings to our client, a win-win situation. OFP's experience in the manufacture of timber frame panels was supplemented by a local labour force under direct OFP supervision, a practical approach that was also excellent for building rapport with the local community.

The design element of this project was particularly challenging and diverse, large glulam beams were put into position to form the impressive structure of the main hall. Sedum roofs and Warmcel insulation all added to the environmentally responsible delivery of this project.

The expertise accrued during this project has stood us in good stead for similar projects, particularly OFP’s ability to create a remote factory, which we have used on 2 projects since, and have plans to use significantly in the future on larger projects.

We feel it is a responsibility of our organisation to not just build projects but to implement our key corporate values in the aim of achieving a sustainable future for everyone.

With this, OFP have and will continue to offer its client’s flexibility to ensure each project achieves what it sets out. We have a keen interest in working with companies on healthcare projects, building school projects and housing associations.

If you would like to know more about the benefits of timber engineering please email us at info@ofptimberframe.com
